This picture was taken on a recent geology trip to Southwestern Utah (on Oct. 9, 2008). It shows the Navajo Sandstone at Coyote Buttes. This feature is called 'the wave.' This rock unit formed over 150 million years ago as wind-blown sand dunes in an ancient desert when all of the continents were merged together. It is a cool spot and the colors don't look real. Even my simple digital camera was able to capture the really interesting colors of the sandstone. I thought the Coast to Coast viewers would enjoy this image.
